“In my childhood, I used to recite very beautiful poems on the occasion of festivals, followed by thunderous applause from my relatives and friends. Even several generations of children knew and still know many of the poems and songs of the talented children’s poet Kostas. Not a single celebration was without them. These poems were about love for mother, about animals and fairy-tale creatures, about mystical phenomena and unbelievable situations. Popular pop group songs, folk songs and satires that have taken hold in the Lithuanian nation were also written by a talented poet. As I grew up and the KGB archives were declassified, it turned out that this talented poet, who wrote bright poems, was a Soviet agent who had been recruited by the NKVD and had betrayed at least fifteen partisans who had fought against the Soviet government. Those people were shot. How could this have happened? And what is to be done now with the excellent poetry of that poet? The Poet is an authorial attempt to explore the poet Kostas, trying to understand his choices under the circumstances of the occupying Soviet system,” Mr.Tamoševičius.
